Canada's original discount store "bargains are our business"
The Army & Navy Department Stores were started in 1919 by Samuel Joseph Cohen. Sam opened his first store at 44 West Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver with $10,000 worth of merchandise he bought from a Kamloops store going out of business. In 1998, Sam’s granddaughter, Jacqui Cohen, became President and CEO and the family owned company continues to thrive – after 85 years – as “Canada’s Original Discount Store” with locations in downtown Vancouver, New Westminster, Langley Mall (opened in 2001), Calgary, Whyte Avenue in Edmonton’s historic Strathcona District and a new 60,000 square foot store opened in October 2003 in Edmonton’s Londonderry Mall.
